What is a Tunnel Tent?
A tunnel tent is a type of tent, just like a cabin tent or a teepee tent.
Tunnel tents are made of poles bent to create an arch, and the tent fabric attached to the arches, creating a tunnel.
People often call a tunnel tent a “pop up tunnel tent”, because once you’ve inserted the poles in the tent it will pop up into form.
They often offers a lot of space, with a good height allowing you to fully stand up inside the tent, and an easy setup. However they are big & bulky, and are only suited for car camping, where you won’t have to carry your tent very far.
How Do You Pitch a Tunnel Tent in the Wind?
Don’t worry, tunnel tents are easy to set up in the wind thanks to their design.
Start by laying down the tent flat on the ground, with the main door facing the wind; you can put rocks or bags on the tent to prevent it from flying away. Then, stake the 4 corners of the tent in the ground.
Once the tent is laid down and secured, open the main door. The wind will get into the tent, and you will see your tent taking form, almost pitching by itself.
Now take the poles, extend them and insert them in the designated area through the fabric. Secure both ends of each pole in the footprint, and your tent will be almost ready.
Finish by setting up the guylines to stabilize your tent, and you’re done! After setting up your tunnel tents, camping can begin!

The first thing to check is the space inside the tent. You need to make sure the tent has enough space to fit everyone, + your gear (unless you plan to store the gear in your car).

With a lot of person sleeping in the tent, it’s also nice to have several doors: imagine having to pee in the middle of the night, and having to go through the first room, walk over everyone and open the main door. Ugh.
