Breakdown by Features – Best 6 Person Inflatable Tent

In order to see which of these tents is the best in its category, we’ll go over 6 ranking factors:

  1. Comfort
  2. Waterproof
  3. Ease of setup
  4. Size & Weight
  5. Durability
  6. Convenience

For each of these 6 factors, we’ll compare the different tents to find out which one is the best. The tent with the highest combined score will win the title of “Best Tent” in its category.

1- Comfort

Perhaps one of the most important factors for a tent: comfort. We judge the comfort of a tent on several things: how much space per person in the tent, can you fully stand up, is there enough ventilation, does it protect from the sun, and will it keep you warm?

Comfort for the Kelty

7/10

Size: 15ft x 9 ft / 4.5m x 2.7m

Center height: 72 inches / 1m83

The Kelty features one big room that can comfortably fit 6 person. Size is similar to some 8 person instant tents. It has vents at the bottom and the top, making for a great airflow.

Comfort for the Moose Outdoors

7/10

Size: 19ft x 9ft / 5.8m x 2.7m

Center height: 79 inches / 2 meters

The Moose Outdoors is originally made for 10 people, which is perfect to fit 6 people + gear. It’s UV resistant, and the big opening doors give great ventilation. It’s so big you can camp as 6 people + gear + and even bring your dogs in the tent!

Comfort for the Vango

8/10

Size: 15ft x 12.5ft / 4.5m x 3.8m

Center height: 80 inches / 2m03

It’s the biggest size out of the 3 we’re reviewing.

The Vango has great ventilation, and a sort of dark-room feature (not totally pitch-black though) which will help you sleep even when the sun rises.

2- Waterproof

Being woken up in the middle of the night by water dropping on your face is one of the worse feelings. Yep, I’ve been there.

Want to avoid it? Make sure your tent is waterproof is you’re planning to camp in rainy areas!

Obviously if you’re planning to camp only in hot & dry areas, disregard this ranking factor.

All 3 tents don’t have a removable rainfly, and you won’t be able to see the stars through the roof of the tent on a clear night.

Waterproof for the Kelty

7/10

The Kelty is definitely waterproof, but doesn’t come with a rainfly. This increases the humidity inside the tent as the water is directly on the fabric.

There is also no protection on the door, so be careful when you open the door after rain or all the water will fall inside the tent.

Waterproof for the Moose Outdoors

8/10

Just like the Kelty, the Moose Outdoors is waterproof, but there is no rainfly. However there are rain protection above the doors, avoiding water to stack on the door and falling in the tent when you open it.

Waterproof for the Vango

7/10

No rainfly like the other 2, but completely waterproof. We love the see-through plastic windows, that will allow you to have light & see outside even under the rain.

3- Ease of setup

A good tent allows you to fully enjoy the outdoors, without having to spend 2 hours trying to set up the tent, only to give up & end up sleeping in your car; it sucks.

Same goes for packing away the tent, it should be easy to fold the tent and put it bag in the carry bag, to be ready to leave as quick as possible.

Ease of setup for the Kelty

7/10

Setup time: 4 minutes

Pack away: 8 minutes, need more time to get the air out.

Pump is included.

Ease of setup for the Moose Outdoors

8/10

Setup time: 3 minutes

Pack away: 5 minutes, can be hard to put back in the bag

Pump is included.

Ease of setup for the Vango

6/10

Setup time: 10 minutes

Pack away: 15 minutes

Pump is included.

4- Size & Weight

We’re looking at the packed size & weight of the tent to see if it’s easy to carry around with you.

Too heavy? Not ideal if you’re planning to go on a backpacking trip where you carry your tent in your bag. But probably not a problem if you go car camping.

Too big? It probably won’t fit in your backpack, and it might not even fit in your car.

Then again, if you drive a massive truck and can fit any tent in your trunk, these don’t apply.

Size & Weight for the Kelty

7/10

Size: 30″ x 10″ / 76cm x 25.4cm

Weight: 18.3 lbs / 8.3kg

Size & Weight for the Moose Outdoors

8/10

Size: 18″ x 14″ x 12″ / 46cm x 35.5cm x 30.5cm

Weight: 15 lbs / 6.8kg

Surprisingly the Moose Outdoors is the smallest & lightest out of the 6 person air tents we’re reviewing.

Size & Weight for the Vango

5/10

Size: 27.5″ x 14″ x 14.5″ / 70cm x 36cm x 37cm

Weight: 38.5 lbs / 17.5kg

The Vango inflatable tent 6 person is the heaviest of the 3, by far, weighing double than the others. It’s also the biggest.

5- Durability

What’s worse than paying a hefty sum of money to buy a tent? Buying a tent only to see it break on your 2nd camping trip. Oh yeah, I know you can picture the rage of the situation.

If you want to invest in a good tent that you will be able to use several times for your camping trips, then a good durable tent is what you’re looking for.

But if you only plan to use the tent one or twice a year, that’s probably not something you’ll have to worry about.

Durability for the Kelty

7/10

The Kelty air 6 tent is made of 68-denier polyester, and pretty durable. Make sure you use the guy lines and properly stake the tent; it will make it more stable & last more.

Durability for the Moose Outdoors

8/10

Made of a durable ripstop tenting fabric, the Moose Outdoors is a durable tent. There are 10 stakes to tie down the tent and make it extra stable in the wind, adding extra durability to your tent.

Durability for the Vango

7/10

The Vango Air Tent 6 Person is made of a special exclusive fabric from Vango, the Protex 70D. It makes it a durable tent, with the addition of a band system that adds stability in the wind and extends the overall durability.

6- Convenience

And finally our last judging factor is convenience. What do we mean by “convenience”?

It’s all of these little details that takes your experience to the next-level, and really make you enjoy your trip even-more.

Examples are dividers for rooms, extra doors for easy access, pockets for storage, a screen room for your pets or your gear, included lights, hole for an electric cable, and much more neat little features.

Convenience for the Kelty

5/10

Features:

  • noiseless zippers
  • guy line pockets for easy storage when not in use

Convenience for the Moose Outdoors

8/10

Features:

  • doors can open all the way and become a porch
  • 3 months warranty
  • extra patches included to prevent air leaks
  • storage nets
  • lantern hanging point
  • 3 doors
  • up to 3 rooms

Convenience for the Vango

7/10

Features:

  • storage pockets
  • lantern hanging points
  • removable groundsheet for easy cleaning
  • divider for up to 2 rooms
  • 2 doors

Things to Know About Tent Size

Tent size is a tricky subject.

Most of the time, tents are grouped by size, depending on how many people can sleep inside: 1 person tents, 2 person tents, 4 person tents, and so on.

But how do tents manufacturers define how many people can sleep inside?

They just see how many people can lay down inside the tent, taking all space available.

This means sleeping in a camping bag, with almost no space between people, and it might mean sleeping with heads next to feet.

It also means there will be no extra space for your gear.

a big tent for 8 people in the wild

Want to be comfortable in your tent? Then you will often have to buy a bigger size tent to make sure that:

  • you have enough space to be comfortable
  • you have space for your gear
  • you can fit inflatable beds

With that being said, some tents are very spacious. It might be listed as a 4 person tent & be very spacious, meaning you’ll fit as 4 + your gear.

If you’re going on a backpacking trip, then size & weight of the tent are very important; in this case, you’ll probably want to get the regular size.
