Where is Alfama?

The district of Alfama, located between the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tagus river, is the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon. Historically, it was considered outside of the city and associated with poverty; only poor people were living there. When Lisbon became safer and touristic, this area evolved in a fancy and artisanal district.

The name “Alfama” comes from the Arabic word “Al-hama” meaning “good water”, “bath”. In this place, you’ll feel as if you were in a small village. The disordered and narrow streets, the colorful architecture, the details of the old buildings, everything is special.

This district also contains lots of tourist sights, especially historical attractions. It’s also very much a party district with an abundance of Fado bars –cultural shows- and restaurants.

2. The second positive aspect is it’s close to the center. In Alfama, you can enjoy a few main sights. It’s also pretty easy for you to go to Baixa, Lisbon’s center, since everything is within walking distance.

3. Last but not least, Alfama is very close to the tram 28 which is the iconic yellow tram in Lisbon. However, be aware that in this popular tram 28 there are lots of pickpockets. If you want to visit it, we would recommend going early in the morning.

Don’t Stay in Alfama If

The oldest district of Lisbon has a lot to offer, however, it’s not a place for everybody.

In Alfama, be warned that there are many steep hills. It could be annoying if you don’t want to walk, if you’re with your children or if you need specific access for a wheelchair.

Moreover, this is the place to enjoy the local nightlife, so this district could be a bit noisy at the end of the day. You should avoid this neighborhood if you’re looking for a quiet place to relax!

How do you get from Alfama to Bairro Alto?

Depending on where you’re staying in Alfama, it’s pretty easy to get from Alfama to Bairro Alto on foot.

First, you’ll cross next to the national theater of Sao Carlos and then you’ll go to the sight Praça Luís de Camões. It’s easy to find but be warmed: in Bairro Alto, “alto” means hight, there are many steep hills.

You can also choose public transportation which is going straight from Cais Lingueta to Rossio. If you prefer to use your own car it would be the same itinerary.
