Road Trip Essentials: 18 Must-Have Items for Your Packing List
Road trips? Now that’s my kind of adventure. I take at least one every year, usually lasting anywhere from one to three weeks.
After countless hours on the road, I’ve learned exactly what makes a trip smooth and what can turn it into a hassle. With the right gear and smart packing strategies, you can stay organized, comfortable, and ready for anything the road throws your way.
Here are my 18 must-have road trip essentials to pack for your next adventure!
These tech must-haves below will keep you from getting lost, disconnected, or stuck with a dead phone.
1. Phone Holder
For me, a phone holder is a no-brainer. I can’t drive somewhere unfamiliar without my phone since I rely on it for GPS.
A phone holder keeps your GPS visible and hands-free, so you can focus on the road without juggling your device. It’s a small accessory that makes a big difference on any road trip.
2. Multiport USB Car Charger
When there are five of you in the car and three phones are on the verge of dying, chaos is guaranteed.
A multiport USB car charger plugs into the car’s cigarette lighter, letting everyone charge at the same time. No more arguments over who gets to charge first.
3. Power Bank
A multiport USB car charger is great, but what happens when you’re away from the car for hours?
That’s where a power bank saves the day—it keeps your phone charged during hikes, sightseeing stops, or when there’s no outlet in sight. Just make sure to charge it before you leave!
4. Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot
Hitting the road is exciting until you drive into a signal dead zone and realize you can’t load maps or send a message.
A portable Wi-Fi hotspot keeps you online no matter where the journey takes you, so you’re never truly off the grid (unless you want to be).
5. Offline Maps App
Cell service can be unpredictable on the road, and getting lost in a dead zone is never fun.
That’s why I always download offline maps before a trip. Personally, I use Google Maps because it’s super easy to save maps for offline use. It keeps me on track no matter where I am, even without a signal.

6. Dash Cam
The best road trip moments happen when you least expect them—scenic drives, wildlife sightings, or even unexpected adventures.
A dash cam captures it all while doubling as a safety backup in case of accidents. Hit record, and let the road tell the story!

Car Organization & Storage
When you’re on the road for days (or weeks), keeping your car organized is essential. These items will help you maximize space and keep things tidy.
7. Car Seat Side Organizer
Road trips mean spending hours in the car and digging around for your sunglasses, snacks, or charger gets old fast.
A car seat side organizer keeps everything within arm’s reach, so you’re not fumbling around while driving. Stay organized, stay focused, and enjoy the ride!
8. Trunk Organizer
When you’re road-tripping for a long time and have a car packed with gear, things can quickly turn into a cluttered mess.
A trunk organizer keeps everything sorted and easy to find, so you’re not unpacking half the car just to grab one thing.
9. Car Ceiling Cargo Net Pocket
Long road trips or family adventures mean packing *a lot*, and suddenly, your car feels way too small.
A car ceiling cargo net pocket turns wasted overhead space into extra storage, perfect for stashing blankets, jackets, or anything lightweight. More space, less chaos!
10. Headrest Tablet Holder
Long drives can get boring, especially for passengers in the back.
A tablet holder for the car headrest turns your backseat into a mini theater, keeping kids (or even adults) entertained with movies and shows.
Safety & Emergency Gear
No one likes to think about car troubles, but being prepared means you can handle the unexpected without stress. These items ensure you’re ready for anything.
11. Roadside Emergency Kit & Spare Tire
Getting stuck on the side of the road isn’t something I want to experience, which is why I always keep a roadside emergency kit and a spare tire in my car.
With jumper cables, a tire repair kit, and a flashlight, I know I’m covered for minor issues. And if a flat tire happens, having a spare means I’m not waiting around for help.
12. First Aid Kit
I never hit the road without a first aid kit—it’s one of those things you don’t think about until you really need it.
Whether it’s a minor cut, a headache, or an unexpected bug bite, having bandages and basic meds on hand saves you from scrambling for a pharmacy in the middle of nowhere. It’s a small thing that brings big peace of mind, especially with kids.
13. Multi-Tool / Swiss Army Knife
The Swiss Army knife my dad gave me from Switzerland is always in my glove box, and I’ve used it for just about everything.
From opening stubborn packaging to quick fixes on the road, it’s one of those tools you don’t realize you need until you do. A small gadget that’s saved me more times than I can count!
Comfort & Convenience
Long hours on the road can be exhausting, but the right gear can make all the difference. These items will help you stay comfortable and ready for adventure.
14. Travel Pillow & Blanket
A travel pillow and blanket have become my road trip essentials ever since that one miserable night trying to sleep in the car without them.
Whether I’m the passenger trying to nap or stopping for a quick rest in the car, having them makes all the difference. Comfort on the road is underrated until you don’t have it!
15. Reusable Water Bottle
On a road trip, I always end up buying big water bottles because I’m never sure when I’ll have access to clean water.
But instead of drinking straight from them, I pour the water into my reusable bottle—it keeps it cold for hours and is way easier to drink from than a heavy, bulky bottle.
16. Cooler
A cooler is a must for me on road trips because I love making sandwiches on the go—ham, cheese, and all.
It keeps everything fresh, from deli meats to fruit, so I don’t have to worry about food spoiling in the car. Plus, it saves me from relying on overpriced unhealthy roadside snacks!

17. Collapsible Trash Bin
I never realized how quickly trash piles up in the car until my first long road trip—snack wrappers, receipts, and empty bottles everywhere.
A collapsible trash bin keeps everything in one place, so I’m not stuck cleaning a disaster at every stop. It’s a small addition that makes a huge difference in keeping the car tidy!
18. Travel Games
Spending hours in the car can get dull, so having a tablet or travel games is a game-changer.
Whether it’s playing a quick round of cards, answering trivia questions, or watching a movie on a tablet, it keeps everyone entertained.
